There are many types of auto insurance that you can choose from for proper coverage. One type of auto insurance is called broad form which for some drivers may be worth considering.

What is A Broad Form Auto Insurance?

Despite its name, this type of auto insurance only covers you in terms of who drives your vehicle. It is a limited form of coverage that carries with it the advantage of being cheap, but also has issues that may not be suitable for your needs. This type of auto insurance is designed for those who never have anyone else drive their vehicle and want to pay as little as possible.

This means that you get the state minimum insurance, but it is even cheaper than normal policies because you are the only one who is covered when driving your vehicle. The advantages to this type of policy may be considerable.

The first and most obvious advantage is the low price. You pay less compared to standard forms of state minimum insurance which can be quite attractive for those who never let anyone else drive.

Single Drivers: If you live alone, broad form is a great way to save money. This is especially true if you drive an older vehicle where comprehensive coverage is simply too much compared to its value.

Special Vehicles: For vehicles that have a limited use, such as a larger pickup truck that you only use for certain times of the year, broad form may save you a considerable amount. Check with your insurance agent to see how much you might save.

The most obvious disadvantage is the restrictions of the insurance itself. If others drive your vehicle, then you cannot use the broad form option. This means that the insurance is quite restrictive and only applies to a smaller percentage of drivers where no one else operates the vehicle.

Limited Coverage: You can only get the state minimum level of insurance which means that if you still have not paid off the loan that allowed you to purchase the vehicle, you cannot buy a broad form policy. It also means that if your vehicle is damaged in an accident that you caused, you will not get any money to repair your car or truck.

Not Enough Coverage: If you get sued for damages, broad form does not offer enough coverage and your assets may be at risk. A full-coverage policy provides ample protection from that possibility.

Limited Vehicles: Broad form is suitable for cars, trucks, and certain types of vehicle, but it may not be right for other types. For example, commercial trucks, motorcycles, and ATVs are ill-suited for broad form coverage.

Is Broad Form Right for You?

Getting broad form insurance comes down to two issues, whether you ever let anyone else drive your vehicle and if you can live with the obvious gaps in the policy.

So, if you fit the narrow scope for which the insurance was designed and you drive an older vehicle, this may be the perfect policy for you.
